Configuring VMWare Workstation’s shared VM datastore using a shell

So, VMWare workstation now has a Shared VMs feature since I believe version 8.0. One of the cool things about Workstation is that it can run headless on a Linux system. However, without the GUI sometimes it’s hard to configure. Here’s how to manually configure the datastore from the command line.

The file we are interested in is /etc/vmware/hostd/datastores.xml. Inside this file is the path to the datastore. An example is shown below.


Edit this to the path you need.


Save it, and then restart the shared VMs service.


That’s it, problem solved!
